How does it play?

Nine Parchments Review image 1

I've had a mixed experience playing Nine Parchments. On i hand, the game is ridiculously fun, no framerate problems or lag. On the other hand, information technology stops existence fun when the game car locks on to your teammate for the umpteenth fourth dimension and you all die, in the same place you did before, again.

Using magic is the main and only viable mode of gainsay in this game (you tin can hit enemies with your fists and staff but that doesn't practise much at all). Though I feel that information technology could do with a few improvements. You lot accept a magic wheel that you can utilize to switch through your spells with supposed ease. The game isn't paused while y'all're selecting spells either, so the more than spells you get, the harder it is to speedily switch between them. That could be the difference between life and death in the later levels (and sometimes not even the later ones).

Aiming Problems

The lock on system can be frustrating a lot of the fourth dimension. This is a game that you are meant to play with others, as even on like shooting fish in a barrel difficulty, treatment all the monsters lone can be tough.

The lock on system can ruin what is otherwise an awesome co-op experience. It 'snaps' on to the monster you're trying to aim at. Every bit a result, this causes problems when you want to target a monster that'south next to your friend.

The game will, TOO oft, decide to lock on to your friend instead. Thus causing many adventitious deaths and annoying everyone. Afterwards and then many wipes, this mechanic starts to getpretty annoying.

This could be fixed with the unproblematic choice of turning friendly burn down OFF, but nope, tin't practice that. The manner the combat works in this game pretty much guarantees that y'all're going to hit some, if not ALL of your teammates a few times, so the fact yous tin can't plough friendly fire off is inexplainable.

Presentation and Graphics

Nine Parchments Review image 2

Nine Parchments has a wonderfully highly-seasoned art mode. The characters all have a articulate artful personality, the environments are oversaturated and really colourful, and the music is lovely to listen to.

Playing on a Switch, I noticed that certain things didn't look as good as they could take. On both handheld and Tv set mode, characters looked slightly pixelated and edges weren't smooth.

You lot didn't have to look hard to see this either, it was e'er right there in front of you. I imagine this is not the example on the PS4 version and the upcoming Xbox One version which will run at 4K 60FPS on the Xbox One X.

The locations still, were superb. Everything is singled-out and stunning. Each location has an obvious theme that it pulls off beautifully. I love games that are full of colour, and this game didn't disappoint in that regard.

With the music, I did experience some oddities in handheld way. The music would sound a bit weird, an instance being the music that plays at the finish of a level. Once it starts striking loftier notes, no affair what volume level yous have your Switch on, it would audio compressed, similar the Switch speakers can't handle information technology.

Chief Features

Nine Parchments Review image 3

The story revolves around a grouping of young wizards in training. They are searching for the missing titular Nine Parchments to impress their teachers and get full-fledged wizards. That'southward pretty much it, though. The game is going from i level to the next and somewhen finding parchments which add spells to your spell book.

That's all there is to it, merely at that place'due south a amuse to this game that keeps you coming back for more. Collectibles like feathers, staffs and hats are ample. It's an amusing feeling having collected a new hat to put on and rub in the face up of your allies.

Hats are symbols of status, you see (they're totally not, but it's fun to show them off anyway). Collecting feathers can unlock a bunch of different things, collecting Staffs tin actually buff your magic depending on the staff.

Play with Friends

Every bit mentioned before, playing solo isn't the ideal way to play, this game WANTS you to play with others. Y'all tin can host your own games, bring together a friend, or bring together from a list of lobbies to play with strangers.

This would work amend however, if the game actually connected you lot to people. The servers don't seem to be in the all-time shape. Connecting to lobbies will take you waiting for ages until you become lucky.

If y'all don't connect within an invisible fourth dimension limit, the game will kick you dorsum to the main menu. Not a big bargain, but imagine having that happen with nearly lobbies you're trying to join. Once you're in someone's game though, it's fine.

Should I play this?

Nine Parchments is a fun piffling game only has some annoying bug that can ruin a good time. On one paw, the characters are visually highly-seasoned, the world is vibrant and the music is great.

The gameplay can be ruined though, by the lock on system and the fact that a game that favours multiplayer doesn't allow you play multiplayer well-nigh of the fourth dimension.

Gamers who should…

People who similar the top-down style games like Diablo, people who merely want something fun to play on their Switch.

Gamers who probably shouldn't…

Playing with others is key to this game, so gamers wanting to get solo might want to look elsewhere.

Like games…

Diablo, Path of Exile, Heroes of the Tempest  are pretty like to this in many means.

The Good The Bad The Bugs
Cute Environments Lock-on System Issues connecting to lobby for multiplayer
Nice Music Fiddly Spell Wheel
Fun Collectables
